Summary

Truly touched by Michelle’s story and vulnerability。 Whatever background you come from politically, it doesn’t matter, hearing her story made me proud to have a woman and family like the Obamas that led with poise and honor。

Michelle Obama is a national treasure。 I enjoyed her writing immensely, even when she talked about things above my head。 I laughed, cried, and cheered with her through becoming。 She's unbelievably smart, courageous, and kind。 I have so much respect for this woman and I'm so glad that she was able to have such a strong impact on our country。 Michelle Obama is a national treasure。 I enjoyed her writing immensely, even when she talked about things above my head。 I laughed, cried, and cheered with her through becoming。 She's unbelievably smart, courageous, and kind。 I have so much respect for this woman and I'm so glad that she was able to have such a strong impact on our country。 。。。more

I love Michelle Obama, but I was hoping for more。 However, I think she knows the impact and reach of a book like hers and wrote with that in mind。 I hope that future books get into more of the dirt, but I guess I understand why she took the high road on so much。

this book was a fantastic read。 it doesn't feel like something written stiffly by an expert author, but rather like an extremely compelling story told personally by an exceedingly intelligent and kind person。 its hopeful and light while still covering some heavy subjects。 this book was a fantastic read。 it doesn't feel like something written stiffly by an expert author, but rather like an extremely compelling story told personally by an exceedingly intelligent and kind person。 its hopeful and light while still covering some heavy subjects。 。。。more

Overall it was very interesting to learn about Michelle's upbringing and how she got to the position that she has today。 The writing was pretty good, however I do feel like this gave me biography vibes instead of autobiographical。 Overall it was very interesting to learn about Michelle's upbringing and how she got to the position that she has today。 The writing was pretty good, however I do feel like this gave me biography vibes instead of autobiographical。 。。。more

Is it the simple act of feeling motivated to do something, or does it go much deeper than that? To me inspiration is something that motivates a person to do something。 Through reading Becoming, I was able to feel motivated to chase what I love。 Throughout the novel, we read how Michelle Obama went from a young black girl living in the South Side of Chicago into a strong, outspoken, and unafraid role model for millions of little girls around the world。 Seeing this helped to motivate me to keep at what inspires and determines me to work harder because one day I might be able to reach new heights and become successful while still doing the things that I love。 A part of the novel I relate to is, “ I probably should’ve said it directly in the moment, but I chickened out, knowing it would hurt, both to say and to hear。 Instead I just let him go。” I was shocked reading this only because I was able to relate to it so much。 I never knew that I would be able to relate so much to such an important life figure through 2 simple sentences。 This shows that the reader’s life can be seen through Michelle's as well。 Whether it be by chickening out of saying goodbye, or getting a scolding from your piano teacher; Michelle is able to take her personal experiences and connect with others with such ease。 Throughout life, Michelle had met death multiple times, and this time was no exception。 In the text she states, “ At that point, the nurse gave us a knowing nod。 It was happening。 Suzanne was leaving 。 My mind went dark。 I had no deep thoughts。 I had no revelations about life or loss。 If anything, I was mad。” In this chapter Michelle was able to describe how heart throbbing this loss was because Suzanne was taken from her at such a young age。 Michelle then ends the novel by stating,“ This was our bid for performance: a rising generation that understood what was possible- and even more was possible for them。 Whatever was coming next, this was a story we could own。” The reason that this is so inspiring is because it highlights that there’s hope left。 Although it may seem scary to grow up and have to face the big world of politics and economy, the story won’t end。 Rather, it will continue on in a new chapter where new generations can write down their own stories。 Sensory language was a major part of Becoming not only because it was able to describe parts of Michelle’s life in such vivid ways, but because it was able to help readers relate more to her story。 “It was the first week of March, the winter snow having melted, leaving the city in what felt like a perpetual state of dampness。” By using sensory language in this sentence, Michelle was able to describe the dreadfulness that the room felt at that moment。 Her father was getting close to saying goodbye for the last time because of his condition。 Because of this, the room and everything about the hospital felt like a place where sadness was stirring up, getting ready to overflow。 “If my family was a square, then Barack’s was a more elaborate piece of geometry, one that reached across oceans。” By using the imagery of geometry to describe family trees, the reader is able to visualize how vast Barack’s family is。 This shows the complexity not only in his life, but also through his ancestors。 “And yet there was a touch of lightness in how she said it。” Michelle uses this metaphor to describe how her mother was finally able to break her silence from the day。 She wasn’t speaking in a tone just to break the silence, rather she was speaking in a soft and loving way。 “I couldn’t have known it then, but these questions would come to dominate the next decade of our lives, pulsing like a drumbeat behind almost everything we did。” Michelle uses a simile in this sentence to describe the occurrence of questions following Barack and her for years to come。 It helps to highlight how frequent they would receive them and how it could be annoying at times。 “Inspiration: the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative。” Inspiration is a vast spectrum of ideals, but when reading Becoming by Michelle Obama you can find it as soon as you open to the first chapter。 This novel will make you experience many different emotions, but one thing you’ll leave with after reading is inspiration。 。。。more

I would not have been able to read this when Trump was President。 Even now, four months into the Biden Presidency, there were so many things that I had a hard time with。 Reading her experience of the near-manor house level of service the President receives, how she worked against it, working to make sure, as much as possible, that Sasha and Malia experienced a normal childhood。 I just found myself thinking that Trump must've felt that level of deference and servitude was due him。 It was really h I would not have been able to read this when Trump was President。 Even now, four months into the Biden Presidency, there were so many things that I had a hard time with。 Reading her experience of the near-manor house level of service the President receives, how she worked against it, working to make sure, as much as possible, that Sasha and Malia experienced a normal childhood。 I just found myself thinking that Trump must've felt that level of deference and servitude was due him。 It was really hard to read about how much care and compassion she brought to the role of First Lady, and think about how much lip service and vacuousness Melania brought。 It made me think a lot about my college years (she's only a couple years younger than me), and how, while I was aware, I also didn't do very much to work to make the world a better place。 I'm doing more now than I did then, and am much more aware。 But it was very hard to get to the end and not feel sad, even though she is still optimistic。 Even though we succeeded in making Trump a one-term, twice-impeached former President。 It's still not over, and I guess I really, really have a hard time with the sure knowledge that it will never be。 But there were times where I cried reading the her love and determination for everyone。 So, in the end, I'm really glad I read it。 。。。more

Loved this book, thought it was a really interesting insight into Michelle's early life and how that shaped her as a woman today。I'm not usually a fan of memoir/autobiographical books as they tend to be overly familiar and too chatty for me, but Becoming is written in a beautifully balanced way that feels distant but friendly - the perfect tone for an autobiography。 The structure of the book I also liked - I've read some memoirs that are divided into themes which means the narrative jumps around Loved this book, thought it was a really interesting insight into Michelle's early life and how that shaped her as a woman today。I'm not usually a fan of memoir/autobiographical books as they tend to be overly familiar and too chatty for me, but Becoming is written in a beautifully balanced way that feels distant but friendly - the perfect tone for an autobiography。 The structure of the book I also liked - I've read some memoirs that are divided into themes which means the narrative jumps around a lot, but I am glad Michelle stuck to a chronological timeline for this book。Michelle has a really great way of mentioning something in the early chapters that she references later on, which I thought was a fantastic way to tie her story together and also demonstrate that she is still the same person from Chicago, despite the huge change her life has undergone。 I didn't know much about Michelle Obama either before reading this book, so I found it a really interesting perspective of what it's like inside the White House - I learned so much about American politics too! Only issue I found with the book is the last 4 years of Michelle in the White House felt very rushed。 I understand that there needed to be more emphasis on her early experience during Barack's presidency, but it felt like the final 4 years were barely explored or mentioned, like the book was hurrying to close。 I think I'd have preferred an extra 50-100 pages just to unpack her later years a bit more。Overall, a really great autobiography from Michelle that's interesting, empowering, and moving。 。。。more

What I love the most about this book is Michelle's message interwoven throughout her autobiography。 There's power in allowing yourself to be heard, in owning your unique story, in using your authentic voice。 More importantly, to me--there's grace in being willing to know and hear others。 What I love the most about this book is Michelle's message interwoven throughout her autobiography。 There's power in allowing yourself to be heard, in owning your unique story, in using your authentic voice。 More importantly, to me--there's grace in being willing to know and hear others。 。。。more

It took me a while to get through this because I did part on audio and part written after my library loan ran out。 I much, much prefer the audio version! In fact, I almost gave up after switching because, without Michelle's warm voice behind the words, the writing felt dry。 However, I'm glad I stuck with it because the ending brought it all together and left my feeling inspired! Although some of the details felt redundant, I loved reading and kind of growing with Michelle as she reflects on her past and ponders what’s next。 This book provided me new perspectives on politics, Chicago and what it means to Michelle to empower young women and eat healthy。 I cried a couple of times throughout this book when she talks about grief and the loss of young souls。 I loved this book。 I’ve seen people discuss how this book is about Barack, while I agree — it’s more than that。 It’s ab Although some of the details felt redundant, I loved reading and kind of growing with Michelle as she reflects on her past and ponders what’s next。 This book provided me new perspectives on politics, Chicago and what it means to Michelle to empower young women and eat healthy。 I cried a couple of times throughout this book when she talks about grief and the loss of young souls。 I loved this book。 I’ve seen people discuss how this book is about Barack, while I agree — it’s more than that。 It’s about how she met him, fell in love with him and why, and their story and she supported him but remained true to herself under the spotlight during his entire presidency。 。。。more

So many emotions! I loved this book and learning more about Mrs。 Obama and her family and life。 Mostly I thought the chapters were cleverly constructed to lay the groundwork, move on to another topic, then come back to what was hinted at at the beginning。
